大英博物館: The Rosetta Stone – the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs – was discovered #onthisday in 1799.
Find out more about the discovery of the stone, how it came to the Museum and why it’s so important in our blog post – link in bio.
Made in 196 BC, the Rosetta Stone is inscribed with a decree written in three scripts – hieroglyphs, Demotic (the ‘popular’ script), and Ancient Greek (the language of the administration). Scholars were able to use the Greek inscription to decipher the hieroglyphs. Read how scholars used the Greek inscription to decipher the hieroglyphs in the blog post in our bio.
